The Assyrians are the indigenous inhabitants of Mesopotamia. They have a history spanning over 6700 years. They are the descendants of the ancient Assyrian Empire and one of the earliest civilizations emerging in Mesopotamia. The heartland of Assyria lies in present-day Northern Iraq and expands into modern-day Iraq, eastward to Lake Urmia in Iran, Turkish Harran, Edessa, Diyarbakir, northward to lake Van and the mountains of Hakkâri, and westward to Syria.
